Description

Looking for a chance to meet locals in rural Georgia and contribute to a community event? The village of Udabno is hosting its second annual ‘Udabno Community Festival’ on October 20th, and everyone is invited to attend, Georgians and non-Georgians alike. The more the merrier! The program is filled with performances, games, workshops, DIY opportunities, and a chance to buy handmade crafts, wines, and foods. Udabno is located 50 km outside of Tbilisi, and can be reached by mini bus (marshrutka) and taxi - be ready for a bumpy ride! ;) There are opportunities for staying the night in one of Udabno’s hostels, as well as setting up a tent for camping, if this is preferable. The festival is part of the long-term project “Youth Work-Community Building in Rural Areas”, funded by the Education, Culture and Audiovisual Executive Agency (EACEA) under the Erasmus+ Programme with the aim of supporting social and economic growth in Georgia’s rural areas. A great part of Udabno’s citizens are eco-migrants from Svaneti, a region in North-West Georgia which experienced numerous natural disasters in 1986, forcing hundreds of families to be internally displaced to other sides of the country, where conditions are not always sufficient (in Udabno families have been living without running water up until two years ago). More than 25 volunteers from different Erasmus + projects, specially from Denmark and Armenia, have been travelling here to help create the festival alongside locals, with the goal of setting the basis for it to be an independently organized event in future years. The festival is perfect for backpackers wanting an authentic meeting with locals, and ideal for anyone who likes music and dance. See you in Udabno on October 20 for the festival!
